December News

Dear Families,

December is a busy month. With all the activities, it is important to keep practicing school work and most importantly to read. In class we have been working on vowel sounds. Your child has been learning short vowel sounds and spelling patterns.

Short Vowels are found in two places in a word.

  1. At the beginning of a word

  2. In a consonant, vowel, consonant pattern (CVC)

Examples:

Short a - cat, apple

Short e - hen, egg

Short i - hit, igloo

Short o - hot, octopus

Short u - fun, umbrella

Math Time!

There have been so many concepts learned so far this year. It is really important that your child focuses on knowing their addition and subtraction facts. This will allow them to focus on the content being covered. We just learned about adding doubles, doubles plus 1, and doubles plus two. There are a lot of free apps your child can download to make learning these facts fun!

Happy Holidays,

Mrs. Tuozzolo

Compassion
This month's character theme is compassion. As a class we discussed ways to show compassion. Our guidance counselor came into our class to share the idea of "Bucket Filling." Students were able to think about ways to be a bucket filler not a bucket dipper. It is important for students to learn how to compliment others, show kindness, and be respectful. At home please discuss these ideas with you child and encourage the positive behaviors we have discussed in school. Thank you for all your support.

Character Education
Character education is an important part of your childís development. We wanted to inform you of some of the habits we are practicing in school. It would benefit your child to incorporate some of these strategies in the home as well.
  1. Always look and listen to the person speaking to show respect.
  2. Clean up after yourself.
  3. Use please and thank you when speaking to someone.
  4. Respect otherís ideas and property.
  5. Wait your turn and be patient.
  6. Push your chair in when you get up.
In school, we enforce these strategies each and every day and hope to create a respectful classroom environment. Along with your help, we hope to have a fun, educational, first grade experience.
